Mission
To provide life and career skills to youth through snowboarding and skateboarding.
Based in Upstate New York, SHRED Foundation works to introduce the youth in local rural and urban areas to snowboarding, and to open their eyes to the opportunities and growth it provides. By harnessing the unifying power of snow/skate culture, SHRED works to inspire youth to follow an alternative path and to engage their drive and creativity to follow it. Majority of the kids that participate in the winter program have never stepped foot on a board. By teaching them something as simple as turning a piece of wood down a hill covered in snow, they walk away with so much more than a newfound passion for snowboarding.
SHRED partners with local stakeholders (organizations, schools, local recreation departments, snow/skate companies, reps, shops, mountains, and brands) and values the importance of teaching its youth the core aspects of the culture, which include individuality, creativity, progression, entrepreneurial drive and community.

Three essential concepts that we emphasize in our program are:
- Self Efficacy: refers to an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments and reflects confidence in the ability to exert control over one’s own motivation, behavior, and social environment. As defined by psychologist Albert Bandura, self-efficacy is the belief that one can perform novel or difficult tasks and attain desired outcomes. According to Bandura and other psychologists, self-efficacy can be generated and increased through “mastery experiences.” Bandura states that these experiences are “the most effective source of efficacy information because they provide the most authentic evidence of whether one can master whatever it takes to succeed.” Read our full article on Self Efficacy here…
- Career Pathing: Our program workshops introduce youth to non traditional and creative careers by partnering them up with individuals doing these jobs within the snow and skate industry.
Some of the workshops include:
- Arts including graphic design, photography, videography, creative writing and more.
- Mentorship/apprenticeship.
- Career exploration including journalism, P.R., Marketing, Retail, engineering and resort management.
- Culture & Community: Kelly, Brushie, Iguchi, Lynn, Gonz, Alva…these are just a few of the shoulders that our culture stands upon. Community is at the center of snowboarding and skateboarding- welcoming creativity, individuality, and expression with open arms. By introducing kids to this incredible and unique environment, confidence, courage, and the feeling of being a part of something bigger are instilled. We work to give back and unite the local snowboarding community by hosting movie premiers with local businesses and our sponsors.
The foundation was created by Danny Hairston, former Senior Program Manager for Stoked Mentoring and former Fundraising and Event Coordinator for Burton Snowboards’ Chill Foundation. Danny is an avid snowboarder and has worked for ten years helping to write curriculum and implement youth development programs utilizing boardsports.
